Personalizing homepage with highlights

Personalizing homepage with highlights

If there is key information that you want to bring to your users front and center as soon as they open the portal, you can use the Highlight Carousel.
The highlight carousel displays at the top of the homepage feed, and can be used to promote articles, or links to external content that you want to highlight.

Managing the highlights

The main way to manage the highlights displayed on the home page is through the scope settings. Go to your User Menu > Scope Settings > Highlights.
Here you'll be able to manage 3 settings.
  1. Highlights Style - lets you choose the way the highlights are displayed.
  2. Number of highlights in the home page - limits the number of highlights displayed. If the list of highlights goes over this number, only the top ones will be displayed.
  3. Highlights - manage the actual highlights to be displayed.

Highlights Style

Currently, there are two ways to display the highlights in the homepage.
The Image Carousel displays highlights in a large image with the title above it:

The Banner Carousel displays the highlights in a carouse of banner like cards:

When to choose which?
  1. Choose the Image Carousel if you give more prominence to the images of the highlights, and want them to take be the centerpiece of the homepage
  2. Choose the Banner Carousel if you are looking for a more condensed view of the highlights that gives you all the information without taking away from the rest of the page.

Highlights

In the highlights section, you can edit, sort, and delete existing highlights. You can also add new highlights.

Adding a highlight

To add a new highlight, click on the Add Highlight button at the end of the highlights list.
Here, you can choose from one of three highlight types:
  1. Article - highlights an article that exists within the portal
  2. Video - highlights a video that can be played from the homepage
    1. You can optionally choose an image, which will be displayed until the user clicks the highlight. Once they do, a modal with a video player will be displayed.
  3. External - highlights a link of your choosing

Sorting highlights

To change the order the highlights are displayed on the homepage, you can either drag the 6 dots on the left of the highlight entry, or use the arrows on the left.

Highlighting an article directly from content creation

You can also highlight an article automatically when you are creating it.
On the content creation form, under Advanced settings, there is a toggle Highlight on the homepage.
When the article is published with this toggle enabled for the first time, a highlight will automatically be created at the top of the list, so that the article is brought to the top of the carousel.
Info
Subsequent publishes, will not bring the highlight to the top of the highlights list. Use the instructions above to sort the highlights as you wish.
If you disable this toggle and publish the article, the highlight will be removed. At this point, you can enable it again to create the highlight at the top.
